Comparison with Fixed-Wing Aircraft
Gyroplanes and gyrodynes perform more like an airplane than a helicopter in terms of speed, range, payload, stability, and safety. Gyrodynes and GAC Gyroplanes have the ability to takeoff and land without the need for a runway. Furthermore, a Gyroplane can fly more slowly than airplanes and will not stall, therefore better suited for various surveillance and patrol applications.
In general, while fixed-wing aircraft are faster and have lower operating costs for long hauls, Gyroplanes have distinct advantages in the following areas:
- VTOL or USTOL (Ultra-short Take Off and Landing) Capability
- Safety – Gyroplanes do not stall at low speed
- Capable of performing low speed low altitude flight
